5 grocers planning smaller formats – planning for small formats in 2024!

Schnuck Markets is the grocer that is trying to make some big moves with some small formats.
The grocer has planned for a new small-format store, which will be in Jasper, Indiana, on Wednesday called Schuck’s Fresh that focuses more on the fresh departments just as the name suggests! It arrives at a time when many food retailers are keeping an eye on smaller and alternative formats.

Sprouts Farmers Market is planning the next-generation small-format model as more efficient for their regular customers, which will give them a “treasure hunt shopping experience.” Some other grocers, such as Schnucks, already have their smaller stores and those small serve more destinations for meals and fresh food.

If we talk about, Lowes Foods’ upcoming store in Charlotte, which is focused on entertainment, North Carolina, area, is going to have nine food service stations, along with some offering made-to-order or grab-and-go options.

For many people, going smaller might be defined by following size constraints, for example, setting up shop at sites such as rural communities, Fareway, or downsizing to suit well into urban environments. Meijer, for instance, has thought to shrink stores that are planned for areas such as suburban and urban.

“In Europe, everyone has witnessed that small formats fare a bit better. In the U.S., large formats have fared a much better, just given, one, shopper perception and two, the way numerous restrictions have been there,” stated Tory Gundelach, senior vice president at Kantar Consulting, he has noted that retailers are very often bounded by the local restrictions and regulations when they are determining the size of a new location.

While grocers in the U.S. are focusing their attention on downsizing, they can go for many ways if they would like to join the proliferation of small formats abroad. “Small” is a word that can be associated, and this depends upon the grocer. At 18,000 square feet, Schnucks’ new store in Jasper is just 30% the size of one of its usual locations. Meijer’s is planning for a location in Orion Township, Michigan, which will occupy about 90,000 square feet — roughly 45% the size of one of its superstores.
